The woman at the well:
how Jesus shared living water.

The greatest evangelism training ever recorded happened beside a well, at noon, with a bucket. Here’s what Jesus did — and how we can do it too.

In short

In John 4, Jesus meets a Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, asks her for a drink, and offers her “living water.” The story teaches seven lessons for sharing faith: go where others won’t, start with a real need, ask before you tell, cross barriers of culture and shame, speak truth with grace, point clearly to Jesus, and trust the power of one testimony — because “many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him” through her (John 4:39).

The scene: noon at Jacob’s well

“And he must needs go through Samaria.”

John 4:4

Most Jewish travellers walked around Samaria. Jesus went straight through it. Tired and thirsty, He sat down at Jacob’s well at “about the sixth hour” — around noon, the hottest part of the day. Then a woman came to draw water, alone, at an hour when nobody else would be there.

Everything that follows is a masterclass in reaching people.

1. Go where others won’t

“Must needs” means it was necessary. Not geographically — spiritually. Jesus had an appointment with one woman in a town everyone else avoided. Evangelism rarely starts in comfortable places. It starts when we deliberately walk through our own “Samaria”: the street corner, the workplace break room, the neighbour we’ve never spoken to.

2. Start with a real need

“There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.”

John 4:7

Jesus began with water — the most practical thing in the scene. He didn’t open with theology; He opened with thirst. It’s why practical love opens spiritual doors: a meal, a coat, prayer for a sick child, a well in a village. Meeting a real need earns the right to talk about a deeper one.

3. Ask before you tell

Jesus asked her for something. That one request made Him the one in need and gave her dignity. Good questions do the same today: “Can I pray with you for anything?” has opened more hearts on the streets of Hamilton than any sermon we’ve preached. People open up to people who listen.

4. Cross the barriers

“How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.”

John 4:9

Ethnicity, religion, gender, reputation — Jesus stepped over every wall that should have kept this conversation from happening. The gospel always moves toward people, never away. Who are the people your church “has no dealings with”? That’s where the harvest is.

5. Speak truth with grace

Jesus gently named the hardest part of her story — five husbands, and the man she was with now not her husband (John 4:16–18). He didn’t expose her to shame her; He revealed that He already knew everything and still wanted her. Truth without grace crushes people. Grace without truth leaves them where they are. Jesus held both.

6. Point clearly to Jesus

“Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.”

John 4:13–14

When she spoke of the coming Messiah, Jesus answered plainly: “I that speak unto thee am he” (John 4:26). Compassion opens the door, but the gospel walks through it. Every act of love we offer should point beyond itself to the One who satisfies the thirst no well can.

7. Trust the power of one testimony

“The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?”

John 4:28–29

She left her water pot — the very reason she came. Within hours, the woman who had avoided the town was leading it to Jesus.

“And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman … And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.”

John 4:39, 42

She had no training and no title. She had a story. So do you. If you’ve never shared yours, start with how to share your testimony on KD-Ziedins.com.

The fields are white

“Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”

John 4:35

Jesus said this while the townspeople were walking toward Him across the fields. The harvest wasn’t coming someday; it was already arriving. It still is. Questions people ask

What is the story of the woman at the well?

In John 4, Jesus travels through Samaria, rests at Jacob’s well and asks a Samaritan woman for a drink. He offers her “living water,” reveals He knows her life, and declares He is the Messiah. She runs to tell her town, and many Samaritans believe in Jesus.

What is the main lesson of the woman at the well?

Jesus crosses every barrier to offer grace and eternal life to someone others avoided, and one changed life can bring a whole community to faith.

Why did the Samaritan woman come to the well at noon?

John 4:6 says it was about the sixth hour, around noon, the hottest part of the day. Many readers note that coming alone at that hour may suggest she was avoiding others, which makes Jesus’ welcome even more striking.

What is living water in John 4?

Living water is the eternal life Jesus gives, which satisfies a spiritual thirst ordinary water cannot. In John 7:38–39 He connects living water with the Holy Spirit given to believers.

How can I share my faith like Jesus did at the well?

Go where others won’t, start with a real need, ask questions and listen, cross cultural and social barriers, speak truth with grace, point clearly to Jesus, and share your own story.
