JOURNAL / GENEROSITY

What the Bible says
about generosity.

Generosity isn’t a fundraising strategy in Scripture. It’s a reflection of who God is — the Giver of every good gift.

In short

Key Bible verses about giving include Proverbs 11:25 (“he that watereth shall be watered also himself”), Luke 6:38 (“Give, and it shall be given unto you”), Acts 20:35 (“It is more blessed to give than to receive”), 2 Corinthians 9:7 (“God loveth a cheerful giver”), Proverbs 19:17 on lending to the LORD by helping the poor, and Mark 12:43–44, where Jesus honours the poor widow who gave all she had.

Why Christians give

We give because God gave first. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son” (John 3:16). Every gift we offer is a small echo of that one. Here are fifteen verses that shape how followers of Jesus give.

Giving with joy

“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”

2 Corinthians 9:7

“Remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Acts 20:35

“The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”

Proverbs 11:25

Generosity is meant to be glad, not guilty. And it waters the giver too.

Sowing and reaping

“He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.”

2 Corinthians 9:6

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom.”

Luke 6:38

Caring for the poor

“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”

Proverbs 19:17

“He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.”

Proverbs 22:9

“Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land.”

Deuteronomy 15:11

In Scripture, care for the poor is never optional extra credit. It’s woven into the covenant.

Love in deed, not just word

“Whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

1 John 3:17–18

“If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?”

James 2:15–16

“Be ye warmed and filled” without a coat or a meal is just words. A cup of water in Jesus’ name is love you can drink — read seven ways one well blesses a community.

The heart behind the gift

“When thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.”

Matthew 6:3–4

“Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven … For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

Matthew 6:20–21

“Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury: For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.”

Mark 12:43–44

Jesus measured the widow’s gift by what it cost her, not by its size. Small gifts given wholeheartedly are never small to Him.

Rich in good works

“Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate.”

1 Timothy 6:17–18

“But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.”

Hebrews 13:16

“As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

Galatians 6:10
